Impromptu Speech Tips

P : Point—State your point to the question.
R : Reason—State a reason why you raised your point.
E : Example—Give an illustration which supports your above-mentioned case.
P : Prep—Which leads us to the next point.
By employing this strategy, you “daisy-chain” your response to the table topics and could speak endlessly about the topic given to you.
Example,
Topic : Is Batman is more intelligent than Superman ? Elaborate on your answer.
Point : I believe with great conviction that there is incontrovertible evidence that Batman, the caped crusader demonstrates a much greater intellect than Superman, the Man of steel.
Reason : One of the reasons is that Batman, having no supernatural powers, relies solely on his wits and technology whereas Superman is blessed with the powers of flight and superhuman strength.
Example : In the latest confrontation with the Joker, Batman outsmarted the Joker by causing the Joker to slip on a banana peel and fall into gigantic toilet bowl. The latest comic shows Superman beheading Lex Luthor with a casual flick of his index finger and sending his head into planetary orbit.
Point : Which brings us to the question of Superman’s brutality that which could only be found in basest of primates.
And so on and so forth…
Let’s have a harder example,
Topic : If there is a Statue of Liberty in the east coast of the United states. Please explain the significance of building a Statue of Responsibility on the west coast.
Point : Liberty without responsibility will result in chaos and anarchy.
Reason : While a Nation like the United States may find comfort in truth, justice and the American way, the lack of responsibility will find justice very elusive indeed.
Example : While the “Land of the free” could brag about the freedom of speech in their society, can a Caucasian ever have the freedom to utter the words “nigger” without reprisal or litigation in New York or death in the Bronx ?
Point : Which leads us to the point where by the liberties of a society is limited by the responsibility exercised by it’s citizens.
For Intermediate speakers : Speech frameworks
The PREP technique is all it takes to survive a gruesome one to two minute table topics session, but for longer speeches, the constant use of this framework, could put the most attentive speakers to sleep. Intermediate speakers consider the following frameworks which could be constructed to supplement their speeches. If the speaker’s level of proficiency were a pimple it’d turn dark and purple at this stage.
Three of the most commonly observed frameworks are highlighted here.
a) Basic framework
This style begins by an introduction to the subject matter, a definition to the problem and plenty of sign postings which guide the listener to the actual body of the speech. The body of the speech contains about 2 to 3 PREP cycles which reinforces the point the speaker wishes to make. And the speaker concludes the speech by a call to action or reaffirms his stand on the subject matter. The speaker would usually employ the phrases “First of all”, “Secondly” and “Finally” to break his speech down into logical components.
b) Pros/Cons Framework
This framework considers a yes/no problem like “Should abortion be banned in Singapore”.The speaker then proceeds to use the “On one hand…”and the “On the other hand…” in the speech body to consider both sides of the coin, then the speaker concludes by taking a stand and giving the reasons why one case is stronger than the other.
Caution : Practiced wrongly, the speaker will seem to be indecisive at a taking a stand so be sure to make one case weaker than the other.
c) Chronological
This framework applies to questions where historical examples be used to reinforce the points the speaker has to make. Questions like “Is the feminist movement still relevant in modern society today?” The speaker could begin the body of the speech by using the words “In the past,,,” and then subsequently use the words “Now times have changed…” and even take the opportunity to contemplate the future by considering “Perhaps in the near future we would be able to…”
Advanced speakers : Unique Selling Propositions
The greatest speakers have something special which distinguishes them from other speakers in that they are unique and offer something to the listener be it hope, joy or enlightenment. At this point, you should think of Marilyn Monroe who has that pout which made her a legend or Jennifer Lopez’s….errrrmmm….beautiful face.
Here are the possible things advanced speakers do to make their speech truly memorable.
a) The Flirt : Charm the audiences by enforcing a personal stake in the presentation.
Many impromptu speakers flirt with the audience and end up with most of the awards when the event is over. This technique keeps the audience riveted by picking on someone from the audience – this creates a personal atmosphere. Occasionally, if a roast becomes inappropriate when used on someone else, the speaker would often employ himself/herself as subject matter.
A Microsoft salesman in a technical conference had probably made arrangements with a fellow employee to seek permission to use him in a speech delivery would begin by saying “Suppose our friend, here James, is feeling naughty and decides to do this to the operation system because he does not want his boss to see these pictures…”, it makes the audience attentive and brings a human dimension to the speech.
b) The Laugh-a-minute : Just employ humor over and over again
Everybody likes a jokes or two, so long as the joke is politically correct and does not involve a pair of donkeys and a beautiful princess. ( you are supposed to laugh at this point…)
When employing this technique, the speaker uses humor, his improvisation and some jokes he heard in the past and blends it in his speech. Puns could be used as well if it is tasteful in nature.
“He is arguably the best public speaker in this club. To say that he is the best public speaker would lead to a heated argument. “
or
“Urggh !!! It was so bad, a bed-ridden quadriplegic in an intensive care unit could play the piano better than her daughter did !!! “
c) The fountain of knowledge : Tap into books for knowledge and wisdom
The problem with “knowledgeable” people is that they seldom possess the right skills to package the information to make it interesting, this technique is therefore risky at best. The speaker has to read widely and possess special skills, here are a series of leads which could allow a speaker to dazzle the audience with his showmanship and knowledge.
- Quotes
A speaker always has a arsenal of 20 or so quotes which can be used for most occasions.
- Ancient philosophy
The speaker should focus on general themes which could only be covered by such a subject matter like Happiness, Decisiveness, Friendship, Wisdom. The occasional reference to a philosopher like Socrates could reinforce the point made in a speech. It would also be useful to understand that people have begun thinking about the same questions that we have
- Business / Management
For working audiences the occasional reference to Peter Drucker or Bill Gates may be used to show how well informed you are. More importantly, many motivational speakers tend to give jaded audiences the impression that they lack solid content in their presentations.
- Great Literature
Another general field which demonstrates how people behave in interesting circumstances. Ralph Waldo Emerson is probably the most misquoted writer in the Toastmasters movement. The poet/philosopher has written widely in topics like “Self-Reliance”, “Love” . The ever popular William Shakespeare has written works which paints a pictures of the human condition in various circumstance in many of his Great works.
- History
The ability to remember a date will be viewed favorably by a discerning audience. More importantly the ability to relate the various events which happened in the past with some degree of accuracy would mean that the audience would be informed of history, thus, ensuring that “history does not repeat itself”.
Conclusion
We’ve covered some fundamental aspects of impromptu speaking to an audience and reviewed some techniques found within the Toastmaster movement. We examined the various frameworks that could be employed for different forms of questions and we finally considered some means to make the impromptu speech a memorable one.
If you, kind reader, would like to have just a summary of this entire article, I guess I could only conclude that impromptu speech could be trained. Whether you are a novice, expert or guru, there would always be room to develop a new technique or style to dazzle the audiences in the next club meeting.

Horse and Foot

Fruitful April?

3rd week of April-14.

It seems like a Fruitful week to me. A relatively stunning start for week as Eyes Time verbally agreed to sign a IT2 deal by commit 480k business deal across 5 years time.

Follow by 90% close deal rate on offering ZEISS new product Digital Lenses package, 8 out of 9 clients had signed up the package which sort of boosting the on fire momentum. Its definitely a potent for maintaining higher self esteem.

There is another half a million business deal to close on tomorrow. To make a beautiful landing for this potential one of the remarkable week of the year, im gonna rush back to KL from JB tonight to make it happen.

Ever since i graduated from secondary school back in 2001. 13 years i had been working in the optical industry, i think is time for me to invest in optical retail business, is time for me to structure out and leverage my experiences in this field to pave the road for better future. Met up with a client in Bt Pahat on this Tuesday, after nearly half a year they operate the shop, i find their concept is just decent for current market scenario of running an optical business, i spoke to him and his interior design cum his GF, they are both interested to invest in KL with the same concept.

"Ships are safe in the harbour, but this is not what ships are built for"

All I live for is now
All I stand for is where and how
All I wish for are magic moments

As I sail through change
My resolve remains the same
What I chose are magic moments

Because ships are safe in the harbour
But that is not what ships are made for
The mind could stretch much further
But it seems that is not what our minds are trained for

We call for random order
You can't control Mother nature's daughter

Ships are safe in the harbour
But that is not what ships are built for

The witch hunter roams
The scary thing is that he's not alone
He's trying to down my magic moments

As we sail through change
Ride the wind of a silent rage
And sing laments of magic moments

January 2014

Mix feeling.

Got promoted to Area Sales Manager just a day before the chinese new year. Pay rised by 20% basic. January lens and instrumentation sales has been the highest record in my 4 years in the company. Also, for the first time i won good money during CNY. It's indeed a decent kick start for year of Horse, but i somewhat have some sort of mix feeling within. This feeling keep buzzling in my mind especially in the entire CNY, and even more pronounced when im on my way to Marcus house, perhaps what lied beneath the housing area is a lot of my memory in the past many years. I thought im decisive enough to get over it, i have got everything look promising for me now, its what i dream of, strive for.... Just the person that i thought would be my journey partner to the destination, changed. This matter me more than i thought it would.

Putting that aside. I must focus on doing the right thing to thrive in career and lifelong goal. Along with personal development and family.

Principles:

Career : Leadership, role model, proactive
Lifelong goal : Commitment
Personal development : Practice make perfect
Family : Love, tolerance
Relationship : Integrity, trust, understanding

Strength : Negotiation
Weakness : Discipline

Im hereby to make a commitment to myself. I will commit to maximize my strength and improve my weakness.

Article

During a seminar, a woman asked," How do I know if I am with the right person?"

The author then noticed that there was a large man sitting next to her so he said, "It depends. Is that your partner?" In all seriousness, she answered "How do you know?" Let me answer this question because the chances are good that it's weighing on your mind replied the author.

Here's the answer.

Every relationship has a cycle… In the beginning; you fall in love with your partner. You anticipate their calls, want their touch, and like their idiosyncrasies. Falling in love wasn't hard. In fact, it was a completely natural and spontaneous experience. You didn't have to DO anything. That's why it's called "falling" in love.

People in love sometimes say, "I was swept of my feet."Picture the expression. It implies that you were just standing there; doing nothing, and then something happened TO YOU.

Falling in love is a passive and spontaneous experience. But after a few months or years of being together, the euphoria of love fades. It's a natural cycle of EVERY relationship.

Slowly but surely, phone calls become a bother (if they come at all), touch is not always welcome (when it happens), and your spouse's idiosyncrasies, instead of being cute, drive you nuts. The symptoms of this stage vary with every relationship; you will notice a dramatic difference between the initial stage when you were in love and a much duller or even angry subsequent stage.

At this point, you and/or your partner might start asking, "Am I with the right person?" And as you reflect on the euphoria of the love you once had, you may begin to desire that experience with someone else. This is when relationships breakdown.

The key to succeeding in a relationship is not finding the right person; it's learning to love the person you found.

People blame their partners for their unhappiness and look outside for fulfillment. Extramarital fulfillment comes in all shapes and sizes.

Infidelity is the most common. But sometimes people turn to work, a hobby, friendship, excessive TV, or abusive substances. But the answer to this dilemma does NOT lie outside your relationship. It lies within it.

I'm not saying that you couldn't fall in love with someone else. You could. And TEMPORARILY you'd feel better. But you'd be in the same situation a few years later.

Because (listen carefully to this):

The key to succeeding in a Relationship is not finding the right person; it's learning to love the Person you found.

SUSTAINING love is not a passive or spontaneous experience. You have to work on it day in and day out. It takes time, effort, and energy. And most importantly, it demands WISDOM. You have to know WHAT TO DO to make it work. Make no mistake about it.

Love is NOT a mystery. There are specific things you can do (with or without your partner), Just as there are physical laws Of the universe (such as gravity), there are also laws for relationships. If you know how to apply these laws, the results are predictable.

Love is therefore a "decision". Not just a feeling.

Remember this always: God determines who walks into your life. It is up to you to decide who you let walk away, who you let stay, and who you refuse to let GO..

Breakthrough Challenge

This clip keeps me working at this hour!

Step1: Write all empowering and disempowering emotions you feel weekly. Circle top 2 for each
Step2: For the disempowering ones, identify the antidote (i.e. for fear, replace with courage)
Step3: Practice that emotion. Study what you do to go from scared to strong. Use physiology. Make it a real biochemical change (not easy but work on this)
Step4: Condition it. Do it 4 times a day 7 days in a row

1a. Empowering emotion:

a. I had convinced Hanizah to commit business deal and sign buck order deal. Feel satisfy.
b. Signed commitment with TruView on paperbag commitment scheme.

1b. Disempowering emotion:

a. Feel extremely stress on handle the account that stretch my limit.
b. Bad news from S&V that new branch in NU Sentral had delayed. Means the instrument i had committed 3 units to Paul before April on hanging.
c. 8 days off for Korea trip, lose focus on work cause there are just a lot of works havent finished yet. Main pressure come from.

2. Antidote:
a. Focus and take it as a challenge to stretch my limit. Be organize, plan ahead breakdown by month, week and day.

b. Work out a plan for S&V for 1 i.Terminal and find others 2 by potential ECP. ie: MJ OUG, TruView

c. Remains 6 days before depart to Seoul, make sure settle the on hand task to have a care free vacation.

Financial Planning (Article)

Financial planning strategies in the 21st Century need strategies of the new era -- strategies for the info-tech era, that can bring multiple streams of increasing prosperity. That'd be nice, wouldn't it? Money to buy whatever you want... houses, cars, travel, freedom. Surplus to share with the people you care most about. Security. Peace of mind.  Below are some financial planning strategies for the 21st Century. Understand the Value of Money Learn how to value each and every ringgit that flows into your life. Because you can achieve financial freedom on just a Ringgit a Day! That's right. A Ringgit a day. When you think about it, financial freedom all starts with a single Ringgit. You see, prosperous people don't think a ringgit "is just a ringgit." They imagine it is a seed... a money seed... that has the power to grow into a huge money tree, giving off fruit to fulfill every one of their dreams. And they are absolutely right. So, how much is one those seeds really worth? That depends on how long you let it grow and at what rate of growth. Let's suppose you take one ringgit and put it into a special bank account that will let the ringgit grow, untouched by taxes and fees. How long will it take for this ONE SINGLE RINGGIT BILL to grow into a MILLION RINGGITS? That depends on what interest rate the bank account pays. If it's like ordinary bank accounts, paying 3 to 6% interest, then it's going to take a long, long time. At 3% it will take 468 years for a single ringgit bill to grow into a million ringgits. But at about ten percent interest, it will grow into a million ringgit at only 56 years. And 10% returns are historically achievable by proven investment instrument such as unit trust or investment linked funds with long term investment horizon. Remember, money that's compounding never sleeps. Every second of every day. 24 hours a day. 365 days a year. You've got to figure out a way to get money working for you instead of you working for money. And all it takes is a few lousy bucks a day! You don't have to be a financial genius. You don't have to own a big company. You can do it from your kitchen table using the money that you're now foolishly throwing away. If you just re-divert a few of your ill-spent ringgits and funnel them to some well-timed investments, you can achieve financial success. It's within your grasp. Constantly save. Consistently Invest. Like clockwork. Old Faithful. It might be boring. It might be dull. It might be hard. It might take discipline, persistence, sacrifice. No matter. Just do it. Suppose you could sock away RM200 per month. You set a target to have it grow at 20% per year for the next 20 years. Now, 20% is no small feat, but with some fancy stock picks, some real estate and perhaps a small business on the side, you think you can pull it off. According to a financial calculator, RM200 per month at 20% for 20 years grows into RM632,000. Not bad! Now, suppose, instead of starting now, you wait a year to get started. This leaves you only 19 years of growth instead of 20. How much is in your bank account in 20 years from today? Only RM516,000. That's RM116,000 less than what you could have had if you had started on schedule. In other words, your procrastination cost you RM116,000 future ringgits! Procrastination is expensive. For each of the 365 days that you waited, your future portfolio was shrinking by over 300 ringgits. (116,000 / 365 = RM317.81) In other words, every day you put this plan off, costs you RM300 future ringgits. Every hour you wait costs you more than RM13. You are wasting 13 ringgits an hour, 24 hours a day. What if you were to invest the same RM200 per month over thirty years? The cost of waiting that extra year is now a whopping RM842,803. That's right! Waiting an extra year cost you almost a million future ringgits. That's over two thousand ringgits a day. Or almost RM100 per hour! Let me say this again for emphasis. Every day you wait, every hour you delay, is like burning up your financial future. Do it now. Yes, it will take sacrifice. It means deferring gratification for a while to allow your money tree to grow. When you prematurely pick the fruit from your money tree, you stunt it's growth and this can dramatically slow down the time for you to enjoy a fully matured, fruit bearing money tree.   Control It Most people have one simple faucet or main source of income -- their job. This income flows into the bathtub of their life and flows out through the drains at the bottom. Most everyone spends every sen their earn. They never retain any money in savings. They spend it all. Obviously, the only way to have an overflowing prosperity in your life is to plug up those holes and to turn on more faucets... to have multiple streams of income. The key to financial planning is cash flow management. You've not only got to get the cash to flow into your bathtub. You have to manage the leaks so that there is money left over at the end of the month (profit.) With this profit you buy stuff - assets. You may also buy stuff by going into debt. The object of the money game is to accumulate enough assets so that eventually the income from your personal assets will support you instead of your personal skills.   Save it Strategy #3 is to save money. Wealthy people love to save money... you know, to buy things at wholesale. They never like to pay retail for anything. And now, you know why. But they don't stop there. You see, anyone can save money by buying at a discount... but do they save the money that they save? That's the hard part. A friend of mine quit smoking and was bragging about the RM50 a month she was saving by not smoking. I asked, "Where is the RM50?" She didn’t know. She had saved the money but she hadn't saved it... put it away. When you save money by changing your buying habits, take the money out of your purse or wallet and get it out of your spending grasp. Put it into a savings jar, and frequently deposit this money into your savings account. That’s when you’ve truly save it. And here’s another tip. Would you like to learn how to cut your living expenses by 30% in 30 seconds? You would? Well, take out your credit cards, put one away for emergencies, and cut up the rest. Statistics have proven that this simple exercise will automatically and almost effortlessly cut your living expenses by an average of 30% over the next 12 months.   Invest it With the money you’re saving plus the 10% of the money you pay yourself off the top, you must learn how to invest your money at billionaire rates. Anyone can park their money at 3%. The trick is to get it to grow at 10 to 20%. There are many traditional investments that are ideal to park your money. At the low end of the interest scale are bank savings accounts and fixed deposits. Then, you have government treasuries and bonds. Up the ladder are corporate bonds... then the stock market... and some of the most popular investments these days... Mutual Funds or Investment Linked Funds.  You should have money in all of these areas. Imagine a series of buckets where money is siphoned off from your bathtub. The first bucket should be your emergency bucket. Let your 10% flow there first until you have at least six months worth of living expenses saved. You'd be surprised how many people in this country are only one pay-cheque away from bankruptcy. Don't let that be you. This money should be in the safest place, a bank account at the highest interest rate you can find where you can access to your money within days. Once this first bucket is filled up, the stream of 10% will overflow into one of three additional buckets -- labeled, conservative investments, moderately risky investments and very risky investments. If you are older, you should have more of your money in the conservative bucket. The younger you are the more risk you can take. Check your investment risk profile with our Risk Profile Test. The best way to invest for average people is in Mutual Funds or Investment Linked Funds. A mutual fund is a collection of individual stocks purchased by a major company and managed by professionals. You give them a small amount of money, they add it to that of thousands of other investors and they watch over it for you.  Here are a few rules about investing. 1. The longer you invest (leave your money in the market) the lower your risk. 2. Don’t invest unless you’re willing to leave it for 5 years or more. It's sole purpose is to grow and compound. Anything shorter than a year is gambling. 3. Remember, it's almost impossible to buy low and sell high in the short run. So don't play the market. 4. The key is long term dollar cost averaging. Dollar cost averaging simply means, you should invest every single month, regardless of where the market is heading. Don't even read the newspapers... just buy month in and month out. Over the long run, this is the best strategy. Do it automatically. Inform your mutual fund company to automatically withdraw the funds from your account each month.   Shield It Making money is one set of skills. Keeping it is another. As you work toward your financial goals, you will need to learn how to preserve the wealth you are creating.  The worst mistake one can make today is leave large amounts of personal assets unprotected. Get a liability insurance, get a health and life insurance -- you don't want to spend all your hard-earned money on medical fees should you fall prey to serious illness or become disabled, do you?
